90 Defender - won't start

Well I'll be heading to euro again tomorrow

The battery that was originally fitted was a 95ah 700 cca,

I've currently got that on fast charge but feel it still not got the ummoh behind it

Will explain why when 8 jump of another battery it will give it more ummoh to start

Worth removing your earth n cleaning the mateing faces up when you fit the correct battery too

Yep, clean the earths.

Got bTtery on order for tomorrow from Halfords

100ah with a cca of 900a so should do. The job

Will clean and copper grease terminals and bonds when I fit battery (hopefully tomorrow)

What engine? A 200tdi should start easily, even with a slow crank. I'd be looking for an air leak in the fuel spill rail - and of course checking all the major earth connections - battery to chassis and chassis to engine block.

Well got the battery fitted today crank over 5 times,.. And boom started and runs fine.

Need to leave it over nught and try it to. Confirm that the battery has sorted it

5 cranks sounds a lot for a Tdi. I still reckon you have a fuel issue. Change the lift pump and check for air leaks. But at least you now have a better battery to spin it over.

A Tdi should pretty much start on the button, ie on the first crank. The only time mine has needed 5 cranks was starting it in minus 5 degrees. And that was without any glow plugs.

So. I've not had. Much. Time to. Look. Or. Work on it this weekend due to family problems,.

But I have been using it over weekend which has give me a bit of insight about the issue.

After installing a correct battery, the landy will turn over without an issue and does start eventually after 10to15 seconds of cranking (leads me. To believe fuel issue).

Once it started and ran for 5 minutes (or half hour) then it will start at the flick of the key.

This leads me to think. It. Is fuel issue or glow plugs.

1. Fuel issue, if their is no fuel in pipes becuade of. Leak. And air in system then it will take a. Short while for engine to be able to fire up.

2. Glow plugs, once they have warmed up. From. Running they are ready when I'm turning it back over but from cold start they ain't getting the "warmth" in them.

If you have a fuel leak at the FPR or anywhere else, air will enter the fuel system once the fuel pump stops and allow fuel to drain back to the tank slowly over night, it will then take a while to pump fuel and refill and pressurise the system before starting.
Once this happens subsequent starts will be ok until left for while, sort out any leaks and it should be fine.

I only have he one job tomorrow so hopefully going to take a look at fuel lines tomorrow to check for any perisment, if needs me I will look at replacing the full system to be on the safe side.

Would lift pump still be a possibility to replace?

Check the fuel leak-off lines at the injectors first, this is a common Tdi issue and is cheap and easy to fix. Check the banjo bolts for tightness and the pipe itself for perishing.

Leaks here mean a difficulty starting after being left for a while as the fuel drains back.

^^^what he said. I had exactly the same problem. Fuel leak-off hoses were perished so changed them and have had no problems since

a 200tdi will start without the glowplugs all day long, even in winter. Only in winter they'll help it start easier that's all they do in the uk.
Really cold places I'd think only then you'd need them.

Some people have said they run 200tdi's without the glowplugs

As everyone has said glow plugs aren’t really necessary on 200tdi. That’ll be air sucked in. Check run off pipes, lift pump and all other fuel lines and unions in that order.

Praying for some time during lighter drier times this weekend so I can get under to check fuel lines, etc as people have suggested check banjos and stuff as I go along, my. Plan is to start at the fuel tank and follow the lines and tighten and replace as I go along

Start at the run off pipes and work backwards. They’re the most likely culprit.
