Ive just bought myself some second hand 8spoke rims with some firestone tyres on. But the rims are rusty. i know nothing about painting/spraying anything so what can i do? ideally i suppose id strip all the paint and start again but what paint/primer etc? how do i strip the paint? i got these 4 and 4 bfgoodrich A/T's with plenty of tred for £80:D bargain. the sizes are about 11/30/50r15 or something odd:confused: .

Have a look in Yellow Pages for a powder coating company nearby and obtain a quote from them. It would mean having to have the tyres removed off the rims, but once blasted and powder coated the wheels will last for ages and should not leak air around the bead edge (which may happen if you only paint the external of the rim without having the tyres removed)

I was going to get mine shotblast and powder coated but by the time you've finished it would be less hassle and not much more expensive to buy new ones. So I ended up nitromorsing them and painting them with white hammerite. Well I say them I've only got round to doing one!!

If you have plenty of time you can use old brake fluid to take the paint off, it doesn't cost anything! White hammerite is good stuff because it is very 'slippery', so mud and crud falls off. Powder coating wheels is fine until the tyre fitting machine breaks the finish. Rust then creeps underneath it and the coating falls off. If you want to keep rust at bay for ever, have the wheels shot-blasted and galvanized.

only a vandal would know that brake fluid removes paint!:D. If i use hammerite do i need to put a coat of anything underneath? what is nitromorsing?? Thanks for the help!

Nitromors, horrible caustic paint stipper. Grunt drinks it.

Does the job, tho' be sure to remove every last trace of it before re-painting.

Agree that although that prep & powdercoat is the mutts nuts, but with the price of new white 8 spokes so cheap, barely worth it.

All depends on how precious you want to be about the finish. If the rust isn't too bad & the current coating isn't coming off in great flakes, a good wire brush & a coat of white smoothrite will make yer bargain wheels look the bowlox from anywhere but 10" away.

Only a vandal or someone who works in a LR garage ;) We often change the brake fluid as the stealers never do it and by the time the warranty runs out and the cars come to us the brake fluid is often black. I suck the stuff out with a syringe and keep it in bottles. It is great for getting old solid brushes back to almost new. You just need patience.

Personally I hate 8-spokes. They are all right on a rice burner cos they look cr@p anyway. In your place I would try to get some decent second hand rims. Wolfs would be the best as they are impossible to bend short of an atomic bomb so you wouldn't have to worry about buying bent rims.

8-spokes look nice on the wall with a hose pipe around them :)

If i come across some better wheels i'll get em but i have these for the moment. i had the standard steel ones before so anything is better than them. will i need spacers to fit these wheels? sizes are [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]32X1150 R15 Thanks

if yer gonna use nitromors wear a good pair of googles and gloves..gloves int that important as a quick wash wiff lots of water will sort it , but if the stuff gets in yer eyes......................................................

Make sure you wash the nitro off well before going near it with a wire brush too...

Evening. I had some brand spanking 8 spokes and as soon as they where balanced the weights took the paint off. does this happen with all rims? Any ideas?
