6.2L GMC V8 diesel engined Defender

Well they can be very, very long running (high milage) engines, of course provided they are looked after - but they can achieve huge milages. Not particularly powerful (approx 130bhp when new and 240ft/lb torque), definitely not economical (18-20 mpg in a 90), but will pull loads all day every day and not complain. Plus they make an awesome sound :D Basically you're looking at similar performance to an early 3.5 Rover V8, but with slightly improved fuel economy and a different, but still awesome noise and feel.

Aye, it's advisable to beef up your front springs, and even mounts. That's BEFORE you start adding your winch bumper, winch, twin batteries, bull bars, fat bloke in the drivers seat, roof rack etc etc... I would definitely be worried about weight distrubution in one of these, especially in a hard top (compared with a CSW with more weight in the rear).
 
yeah they are bloody heavy! i put one in a rangie few years ago and broke me engine crane :)
think i put heavy duty springs and shocks on front and all was well. i was getting more than 18mpg!!! think was only early twenties but every little helps :)
lucky its got an auto as mine ate 2 lt77 boxes before i stuck an auto in it.

Yeah, the earlier ones got decent mpg - they were designed in the midst of the oil crises in the 70s - but as the years went by they kept adding power and losing economy, and by the end, at 150bhp they would barely achieve 15mpg.
 
I would be dissapointed in having a 6.2V8 with all the hassle and that little power - rover V8 is more than good enough, quite easy to make them breathe well too :)
 
Thanks for all the info chaps, sounds to me like I'll stick my 3.5 V8 for now, then we'll see how it goes in the future?

Oh and my mates just pointed out the condition of the road underneath it, looks a tad on the oil stained side of things! Lol!
 
no, its in my dads :eek:suzuki lj :eek: but by **** does it go! :D 0-60 between 2 and 3 seconds depending if its rained or not but it maxxes out at 65

HHHmmm, Gota say, I aint the V-tech engines biggest fan, all top end power at 9 million revs and bugger all low down! Never enjoyed driving one yet, just not my driving style.

And because of all the top end power that suddenly comes on tap I wouldnt have throught it would be a very good choice for a trials car ether??

nope! its got power going to the wheels continusley (sorry cant spell) as its an auto and then its got the grip to make it go its crap on tarmac though. it helps that it only weighs about 1/2 a ton, i can pic the front end up! :eek: is a bit scary, i mean when your front wheels are about 1" off the ground :eek: but fun!:D
