5 mb 2.25 diesel onto 2A box

Hello.

I'm in the process of recommisioning my SWB 2A which I've had for 15 years (last used in 2002).
I've got hold of a 5 mb diesel engine to replace the old, split, 3 mb, along with it came a new boxed 9.5" complete clutch set (for the S3 109 that the engine came from) - question is: can I use any or all of it or what new bits do I need to buy? BTW the old 9" friction plate is U/S (not much wear but 2 broken springs) pressure plate & bearing look OK tho.

The simple test is to see if the new clutch plate fits the splines of the gearbox shaft you are going to use.
It probably will.
If it does, caramba!

you need to use the series 2a clutch assembly if your using series 2a box, i think! You hve to drill 1 or more new holes for dowels.

Thanks for that - good idea, so good that I had to go up the yard with a torch to try it and the splines fit.

If I remember rightly the clutch plate should match the gearbox rather than the engine. The splines are all the same so do not use that as a guide, its all about release mechanisms.

hence the reason i said drill holes in 2a pressure plate to fit 5mb flywheel dowels

Thanks for everyone's comments.

After reading the above advice and having a real close look at the parts I've got I can confirm that Landyboy and Davec are spot on - none of my new clutch bits will work with this conversion and the old 2A pressure plate needs a couple of new holes drilled for the dowels on the new engine flywheel.

I'll have to buy a new 9" friction plate but I should be able to offset this by flogging the complete new series 3 clutch kit. Anybody need one? I'm on the Leicester/Northamptonshire border.

Rest assured, Landy gearbox / centreplate splines are NOT all the same, and they must match.

The centre plate either slides onto the gearbox input shaft - or it doesn't.

i,ve done it the other way round,2a engine to a series 3 box,used the 2a clutch plate and cover and a series 3 bearing ground a longer bolt to take up the extra length on the pushrod from the slave to the clutch arm,so going buy that measure the height of your cover plates and see if there is a difference,might help might not,should fit one way or another.just thought,kid sister put an early 2.5 petrol to a 2a box,but i did,nt do it for her as we werent speakin,but i,m sure she used the 2a clutch

I'm sure that I have to use the release bearing that matches the gearbox, I'm not sure about the plates tho, I have measured them and there's only 1/4" difference in height (when layed flat).
I read on another forum that someone had done this conversion and used an adaptor plate but no more info than that.

never knew they did an adapter plate for this simplish job,and all i,ve spoke to today reckons use 2a clutch complete....the only problem kid sister came across was the bolt holes being imperial on the gearbox needed reaming through a tad with a drill to fit the metric studs cause she reckons there a bloody tight fit otherwise,and she does her own repairs by the way as long as i watch over her,apart from when we aint talking

p.s. now you know why i made up a new push rod...."quarter inch"

All sorted now

I bought the correct cover plate for the job today - there's one that allows you to put a 9.5" clutch on a 2A box, it's a standard part, not an adaptor, no drilling - it just bolts on.
Very simple job, I was just getting cheesed off cos the shops were shut and I wanted to get on with it using the bits I'd got and that wasn't going to happen - took a while for me to accept it tho.
