hi

i have had my 1977 series 3 for about a week now and the bloke that sold it to me said he never used it in 4X4 mode as it was soooo tiresum for him to pop the diff locks into 4X4 mode ! (plonker)

so i thought i would give it a go and dont the nessasery and ploped down the old yellow knob ,all was well and great .

so i pulled the red knob down and the yellow knob popped up ,fantastic ..but i dont think it disengaged ,as it was making such a noise at 50 mph lol

so i pulled and popped knobs and its seems to have done the trick

now the question is can lack of use make all the diffs and boxes and all the gismos a bit stiff ? and will more use help it all to work proper ?

other than that its not a bad old thing apart from the petrol guage flicking about cos of the vibrations

ta

ah take by diff lock you really mean yer free wheel hubs???
if so either lock em and leave them or bin them, they aint much good.
yer diffs will turn when ever yer moving so long as you dunt unlock yer hubs.
and like most things lack of use will cause things to get stiff/stuck, try lots of wd40 on the linkage then operate the lever fer ages that should free things up fer you.

Just one thing in case ya dint know, don't drive on the road fer any length of time in 4wd cos yull wind up yer shafts & I dint mean **** them off neither, yull bust 'em!

Save it for the muddy stuff.

hi
thanks for the help i i know all about not driving to far or to fast in 4wd thats the reason for my concern,
putting it in and out of 4wd has sorted it out and back in 2wd but was worried that it might be some kind of mechanical thing ,the reason for the post .
i think the last owner didint really use it much and lots need "bedding in" again.
the temp guage was not working but has started to work again and the mixture was all wrong ,it has a weber carb and K & N filter which im not over the moon about as i was trying to keep it as genuine as poss ,not bothered about the free wheel hubs as they are working fine now .
i bought it as it was cheap to resell but i think i will have some fun with it for a bit first

for normal driving just use the black knob.
the red knob is for high or low range gears. change only when stopped.
the yellow knob is for four wheel drive. only use in soft/loose sufaces. dont use on the hard stuff.
dont exceed 30 mph in FWD. it aint a disco or a range rover!

all the options (inc the FWH) should be used say, once a month. just to lubricate and stop any seizure of the linkages.
