when i try and put it is 3rd gear it always grinds especially when it has warmed up abit. i thouhgt it might be the syncromesh going but i tried double clutching and still, it grinded it. i keep telling my self ''if you cant find it grind it'' but am starting to get a bit worried i will have a hefty bill coming my way!
any ideas?

yu have an LT77 gearbox. syncro going on 1st and second is most common, closely fllowed by 1st,2nd and 3rd. still look on Ashcrofts site - but lots do that - it mite just be a simple detent spring.

just looked of ashcroft and they suggested that you could upgrade from a lt77 to a R380....''Should the LT 77 fail on your vehicle you will usually have the opportunity to replace it with a later R 380, unfortunatly surcharges will apply but if you are either planning to keep the vehicle, working it hard for a living or going on an overland trip where both reliability and the facility to add an oil cooler are important then this additional expenditure may well be worthwhile''
if this is so then would u suggest uprading to R380??

Coupla things, the grind into third is a really common problem and just means the syncromesh into the gear is on its way out. You can try adapting your driving style slightly to change into the gear in almost 2 moves, one out of the previous gear and another out of neutral into third. If going from 2nd to 3rd try and keep your foot in exactly the same position on the gas when you change, ie don't lift off, and if going from 4th to 3rd give it a bit extra, just to make the syncro have to work less hard. Also make sure you have the correct oil in there (VERY important!!!) and the right level, i pretty much managed to stop mine from doing this just by reducing the oil level to the right amount, so it is kinda touchy!

how do you know what the right level is? and how do you reduce or icrease the amount i.e where do u fill it from or release it from?
thanks for help

The filler plug is on the back of the gearbox next to the handbrake drum, unscrew it with a 1/2" socket drive and if oil comes out when the car is parked on the level then there was too much in there, if you can get more in without it pouring out then there wasn't enough! The level it should be filled to is the level of the bottom lip of the plug.

PS I int really in scotland! Sorry bout that!:D:D

ok cheer ill do that tomoz...ne percific tran oil u would suggest??
lol no worries sorry too....was funny though, the amount of ''views'' as well
good stuff!!

Weirdly you will have to get ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) for the LT77 manual gearbox (don't ask why, it's a landrover thing!!) and it's bright red so don't wear your best white shirt while checking it coz it don't some out the sleeves if it's too full! (speaking from personal experience of recent incurrence of the wrath of doris)
