Hi all you lovely people!

I am looking to buy a 300tdi rear axle to replace a ranger rover classic rear axle currently on my defender, which was replaced by the previous owner.

I need some help in determining whether a td5 would fit my vehicle or what’s the best option in my situation.

cheers for your time

Whats wrong with the existing axle ? and yes a TD5 will fit (I have a 2006 on my 1994 D90)

thanks for the reply bud!

My current axle (10 spline) has broken spline teeth, in need of new hubs and discs on the back.

My thinking was to replace the rear with a 300tdi making the vehicle all uniform. If not a td5 rear axle

I am not up on the ratings of different axles so if the below is not the case someone with more knowledge please point it out so everyone can ignore.

You say you have a ‘98 110 so one of the big issues is going to be the weight rating of the axle. I know a discovery axle is not rated for the weight of a 110 so I would be surprised if a Range Rover classic axle that you currently have is rated for a 110.
The rover style axles are all Interchangable one everything other than the rear of a 110 or 130 which used a Salisbury up until about 2002 (from memory). I know the later model td5 and and tdci models used a rover style rear but I do not know what was done to match the weight rating to the heavier vehicles.

On that note if you currently have a Range Rover classic axle and replace it with a pre 2002 (again from memory) axle it will be Salisbury and because of the different shape and nose length you will likely need a new prop shaft to match.
