Hi all.

I'm new to the site and to Discovery ownership lol. I have a problem with the transfer box and gearbox on my 300tdi manual.
The selector would not move at all when i bought it last month and after a couple of hours with a crow bar we managed to free it up a bit and select diff lock. Howeer when driving in diff lock its clear the transfer box is pretty knackered, the prop is bouncing around because it is so loose in there. Also there is a odd squeaking noice coming from the O/S front hub area so maybe the shafts arn't doing that great either.

Now i also have a rotten 200tdi with a blown engine, when i bought it i was told it had a 300tdi gearbox fitted. So my plan is to swap the gear and transfer box straight into my 300. Firstly is this possible if so what information so i know before i tackle the task?

Any help or info would be greatly appricated.

Cheers Chris.

Recently got hold of a donor disco in order to upgrade my 110. 200tdi engine duly removed. I did also intend using the transfer box -as recommended throughout this forum - but discovered that a 300tdi gear-box had been fitted, and the transfer box with that was not the same as that on the 200. Apparently there are twice as many splines on the 300 version. Hope this helps...

So if the transfer boxes are different and my 200tdi is fitted with a 300tdi gearbox the transfer box must be the same.

Heard the easy way to check if its a 300tdi box is that reverse is down and to the right in the cab. This is the case with both the trucks.
So as above if the 200tdi is fitted with a 300tdi gearbox then the transfer box would also have to be from a 300tdi?

Can anyone conferm this and always anything i should consider changing once i've removed the boxes? Oil seals, oil, etc?

Thanks Chris.

The 200/300 (probably the TD5 too) Disco's were all fitted with long inputshaft gearboxes, the 200tdi's started with the LT77 then about the time of the 300 the R380 was used, which is a much better box. The top left or bottom right for reverse refers to the main box, if it is bottom right then you have a R380.

The LT230 transfer box was the same on Disco's and Defenders and some RR's, you can even fit the RR borg warner viscous coupled transfer case with a bracket mod and a linkage change. I have an LT230 from a Disco in my 90.

If you take the boxes off I would strongly recommend a complete clutch kit, heavy duty clutch plate if you can get one, clutch cover, release bearing, fork (DO NOT GET BRITPART).

Thanks very much for the info guys, so based on that i should have two R380 gearboxs and two LT230 transfer boxes.
This means that the parts will be interchangable between both trucks and i won't have to worry about the splines being different.
