Ok she past her MOT and time to keep her good so going to change the timing belt on my 1997 Disco soon cos no idea when last done or ever! Iv had a look and seen that there have been problems with the timing belts and various upgrades available, its there a way to know if it has been done already just dont want to buy a kit and chnage the same thing. Other thing is to lock the engine do you have to buy a kit i know when i done my old pug diesel it was just 3 M8 bolts and a 6mm drill bit can you improvise with the disco too. Anything else to be aware of or help much appreciated. Gary

All 300tdi's should have had the mod kit done to stop the belt wearing now! One way to tell is to take the injection pump pulley inspection plate off and see if it's full of rubber from excessive wear!!

Be careful when ordering as there are 2 cambelt kit's for the 300di (depending on vin N°).

Get a mate (or small child) to hold a screw driver in the bell houseing (there is a slot in flywheel) to undo the crank pulley bolt, Put all the bolts off the cambelt cover in order into a piece of cardboard as they are all different lenghs!

9mm drill will lock the injection pump, you can buy a timing kit but I have never bothered.

I've just used the drill bit in the IP for ones i've done...

Being a 97, be wary that if your VIN is VA560898 +/- 50 it could be either of the cam belt tensioners... Typical Land Rover!
