300tdi steering column rattle

Another one while I'm here. For a wee while I've had a fair rattle through the steering column if I go over a pothole or rut in the road. When I had it previously I changed the steering shock but didnt seem to make any difference and now I've finished the rebuild it definitely seems worse. Only thing I can think of that's causing it is swivel preload but anyone know of anything else before I go and check that?

Apart from wear and tear in joints I found it was incorrect preload or a duff axle shock that will cause your symptoms.

Both front shocks are new so I'll go with preloads
