As for any car to do a rally they are far from original spec, so the base vehicle is pretty much immaterial.

As for what car the OP looks for and can find in good condition I hope we find out. Be it Series or defender.

I would just say it should be a V8 something he likes and is prepared for the problems coming.

Sorry for the negativity on the series. But that's how I feel about it. I will soon do a introduction post.
 
Thank you everyone again for the advice on the rally car but like I said I will not be continuing on with it, maybe some time in the future if I have the money. I don't think I will be looking at a series because as far as I understand they are not so good if I want to do long trips and its quite slow too. I will probably look at a 300tdi. Thanks again.

I have had more Series than I can count, and driven more Defenders.
And driven over every kind of terrain over the 40 years I have been driving them.

And what I would observe about either is that they aren't a bad ride on standard springs.
For some reason, owners have a tendency to assume that heavy duty is always better.
And heavy duty springs do give a very harsh ride.

You can recommend what you like, and I can recommend what I like.
Jan seems like a sensible chap. he seems to have heeded our advice as to rallying being an expensive hobby for a young man.
Sure he can make up his own mind.

Whereabouts do you farm, then?

I agree let's settle it there. Afterall it is Jan's decision. I farm in South Africa but I am not the owner of the farm more of like a co-manager.

That is quite a big location, so I doubt if your security is compromised by revealing it.

I always farmed in the UK, quite a few places, although my own farm was in Cornwall.

You should pop into AG and have a look at some of the farming threads. Quite a few involved with agriculture on the forum, and several South Africans as well.
