Could you guys give me some pointers regarding changing the radiator on my 300tdi please.

I have ordered the radiator and was hoping to change it tomorrow. However, after watching the video by Trailerfitter on YouTube, I now think I need lots of oring, washers etc. I would like to think I am prepared before I start.

So far I think I may need the following;

O rings for oil cooler pipes
Plug and oring for thermostat housing
Washer for drain plug on the block.
Thermostat (I want to back- flush the system).
Does the thermostat have a gasket?
Air bleed valv thing going to the header tank.

I will need coolant too.

Anything else that is suggested? Any part numbers would be welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help.

More often than not the ones that are there will do service again. However you can purchase a whole box of garage assorted O rings on flea bay for the price of a couple of numbered ones in a package. Same goes for sealing washers.

Does anyone know the size of the o rings and washers?

I have looked in the parts catalogue and it looks like the oil cooler o rings are esr 1954 but I cant find them anywhere.
I have managed to find the drain plug washer for the engine AFU1882LLR and this is 2.29 from Paddocks, so I understand the buy a set from ebay suggestion, but would like to know the diameter if anyone knows so i can be sure to order a pack with them in!

I ordered the radiator mid-day yesterday off ebay and it was ready to collect at 9.00 this morning and it has arrived in a decent condition. RADIATOR FITS LAND ROVER DEFENDER DISCOVERY 300TDI BTP2275 1994-1998 | eBay I cant argue at just under £100 including delivery and a two year guarantee - though time will tell on that one. Unfortunately I have not had time to fit it and now wont get a chance until the weekend.

I may just order a set of o-rings and copper washers off ebay!

Thanks for your help so far.

Mick

Well the radiator is going in on Saturday at the same time as the timing belt is being done. I took the grill off today to loosen all the screws etc ready for the weekend and I noticed the bottom section of the radiator frame was badly corroded, so ordered a 2nd hand one off ebay. Said it was for a defender/discovery 1 but after ordering I noticed the frame had different mounts on the sides and the bottom, and no pegs on the top. I believe the top and sides are OK on my existing frame so I can use those, but I need the bottom section which it looks like I will have to weld a couple of pegs too - BUT, is the frame the same size?

That frame will probably be for a 200tdi if it's to fit a disco 1. Get yourself to a scrappy and find one off a disco with a 300 and it should fit.
As for changing the radiator it's a piece of ****. Disconnect everything from the old one. Slide it out (might as well take out the intercooler and give that a good clean out and flush with petrol while you're at it) and refit the new one. Bleed, or in your case flush then bleed, the coolant and jobs done.
