Passenger window makes a very loud bang after about an inch of opening. Opens and shuts ok apart from that.

Any ideas as to what might need replacing/repairing?

Likely that is the window chanel came loose.

There is a main chanel, where the window sits, and 2 smaller chanels, attached to this one, where the electric motor arms run in...

Mine used to do the same noise, one of the chanels came loose/snapped, the window was still opening and closing as it was being pushed/pulled by the 2nd arm/chanel, the noise was the loose channel banging around.

To solve the problem will have to be a new window chanel, or weld it.
I've welded mine.. first time with the MIG, so a bit crappy, but did the job.

Hope it helps..but only way to find out is taking the door card off..

Sounds like worn regulator teeth or worn teeth on the cog on the motor. Mine's overdue replacing and makes some godawful noises ! :)

I thought the same on mine... as it was a clang on going down, like something jumping out of place.. but in the end was the channel

Thanks. Another job added to the list for the weekend :)

How hard is it for someone with no training to use a MIG welder? Is it worth trying to teach myself or is it better to pay someone to do the job properly?

it could also be the round plastic clips that run inside the channel. 1 of mine broke on the passenger window and it used to bang after about an inch. now the window just doesnt work at all:doh:
