the block was warped on my 300tdi so a freind sourced an engine from another site and i paid a local garage to fit it and now it has a misfire and the exhaust fumes reek of diesel, the lad who fitted it says they aren't liable with it being a second hand engine which to be fair is understandable, I'm going to pull the injectors out tomorrow but if anybody has any idea what it could be that would be a great help :D or should i just go looking for the engines previous owner now

If you can get the injectors tested for spray pattern and opening pressure at a good diesel fitter then that would be a good start.

It could be that one of the injectors 'drips' and the unatomised fuel doesn't completely combust.

thats what i had in mind but wasnt sure how to word it :D swapped the injectors today from the old engine and it seems so have cleared up the misfire, exhaust not smelling of diesel anymore but is still quite smokey, thinking maybe the diesel could have lubed up the bore a bit too much and stopped the piston rings doing their job correctly? going to insure it tommorow and give it a run to see if it clears up, will post back results

insured it today and gave it a run, smokey on boost (blue),flat as a fart and what sounds like terrible diesel knock, checked for play in the turbo and you can give it quite a wiggle so thats probably the cause of the blue smoke but could pump timing cause the other problem? how hard is it to set the pump timing?

have a read of this, it's fairly long and a bit dis jointed but it'll give you a good understanding of what to do regarding altering your IP for best performance

Make sure of you pump timing before doing any of that ^^^^^^.

Remove the small inspection cover on the front of the timing case in front of the IP pulley (3 bolts) Rotate engine until you can insert a 9.5 mm drill bit at about the 11 o'clock position. Look up thru the wading plug hole in the flywheel housing and you should see the 'missing tooth' that is the TDC timing mark on the flywheel.

You should also have a read of the pump timing thread in the 'Common question' bit of this forum. Very good read.

Your terrible diesel knock probably sounds like a sudden clattering noise, and is a sure sign the injection timing is way too far advanced.

Battenberg did a super post about this recently. Find it and read it before you try anything else.

cheers lads! i wont be able to get another look at it till tuesday as i work all weekend and get tuesday and wednesday off so will check the pump timing and fingers crossed it will be that :)

ok busy checking pump timing now, turned the engine over by hand while looking through the wading hole till i found the "missing tooth" am i right in thinking its just a groove in the flywheel because with this lined up with the wading hole the pump is about half a turn out? surely it wouldn't run if it was so far out would it? or am i being a plum

yes im being a plum, turned it over till the drill bit slotted in place and locked the pump and had another spy through the hole and the slot is there but off to one side, am guessing it should be inline with the hole?do i just crack the 10mm bolts off on the pump and adjust it till its lined up?
