Hi all

my 95 300tdi es is loosing water recently.
headgasket done only a few weeks ago, water pump also done so no apparent leaks under bonnet.

however while driving the car fills up with condensation...
which leads me to thinking that maybe the heater matrix is leaking?

the confusing thing is... that the carpets were already wet from a little dip in a puddle last week. so cant really tell weather the wet carpets or the condensation is from the water already there exaporating or the water evaporating str8 off the heater matrix...
maybe thats why the carpets werent really drying out...

so anyone got any ideas of where to look directly or solutions, save me scrabbling around in the dark.

would bypassing the heater matrix plumbing temporarily be a good idea? to see if i lose any water then...

all of your 2pennies would be appreciated :)

Sounds as though your problem is related to the heater or its connections.
Bye-passing the heater in the engine compartment would at least show where the problem is.

Did you change p gasket at the same time as you did the waterpump, or has it at some time previously upgraded to metalised type???

Look just behind the cast piece that supports Alternator and waterpump from the passenger side and where this piece meets the engine you'll see where the p gasket sits, you'll also see any signs of water leakage down the block from there.

this P gasket, is it the water pump gasket itself? or is it something else?

when i did the water pump i fitted a new paper gasket and thin layer of gasket compound around one of the bolts which sheared off. the bolt holds the water pump in, apparently its the long one which always breaks. ill have a look at that in the daylight for any leaks around it...

ill bypass the heater matrix in the engine bay and see what thats like. had a look under the back of the dash in the footwells and seems to be dry around there. interesting.

would it be possible with the heater matrix out of circuit to then pressure test it reasonably simply without having to rip all the dash out...

cheers
