Hi
Can anyone offer some advice please?
I have just striped a 300tdi engine out of a discovery to put into my 110, but before it goes in I am going to rebuild it.
I have striped it down and I have measured the crank at 63.46mm for the mains
The book says that it should be between 63.475 and 63.485 with a service limit of 63.36mm below which it needs re-grinding, so what if you like me are not in between the two normal measurements but have not reached the service limit? Do I have it re-ground or just fit new shells. Its done 114k miles so far so it may do another 50k before it reaches the service limit, it’s the same situation with the big ends and the bores

if the journals all look nice and smooth and evenly worn then i'd be inclined to bung new shells in. make sure they are good ones like vandervell or equivalent.
if it is worn roughly with grooves in it and the shells look completely shagged in the middle then get a regrind as new shells will not last 5 mins.
deglaze the bores and check the rings, new ones shouldnt be that expensive and would be worth it as you are in there.
114k seems low for things to be worn. i took a 300 that had cooked the head apart at 150k and the shells were as fresh as a daisy!
