elo all , 2 weeks ago i did a deal which left me with my 1st disco , a 1996 nreg 300tdi which owed me about 300 quid . it had been standing over 2 years ,non runner? no wheels , no drivers window, damaged wings n bonnet and no head lights . altho it did av mice , grass and other wildlife inside .
rite i got stuck in threw 500 quid at it ,its nw taxed n mot with engine runnin great .
its a great lookin motor nw , nightfire red, alloys , but i av probs

basically 3 things
rev counter not workin (odd occaision it works briefly) and battery only charging sometimes . i assume alternator scrap ???

speedo has nw giv up too

seems to be too much presure in cooling system ? fitted new rad after origanal started to leak this has nw also started to leak in same place , i have loosened filler cap so ther is no pressure and leak stopped ???

i will mention that i found a recceipt in glove box which says the head was pressure tested and refitted at john craddocks a few months b4 it was left to stand
any help greatly appreciated .

I had an intermittent rev counter on my 300TDi, traced it to a loose connector on the back of the alternator so I reckon you could kill 2 birds with 1 stone there.
 
For the rev counter / speedo it sounds like an altinator fault. Check wiring and that the contact points are clean. If not, buy a new one, (but not a really cheap **** one that will only last 13 months).

I got an exchange item (Denso), from Cavandish in Chesterfield. They were about the cheapest without it being some ****e from Britpart or where ever.

I'd rather contract rabees than fit anything ****part to my car.

ditch the alt, i did and all my speedo and charging problems disappeared.
as for the cooling pressure, a quick check, get hold of another header cap and try it - it might be something as soft as a crap tank cap.
 
thanks for all ur replies guys , checked and replaced all connections still no good so replaced alt and all probs sorted . was quoted up to 195 for new alt . ended up gettin a new one frm cjf replacements in cannock for 76 plus vat and my old faulty one . pulley wheel was different but they swaped it ther n then for me .
more on leak later but nw my problem is the tensioner !!!
i removed to fit new belt but soon realised it had already been attacked by someone , the thread is virtually stripped frm wer the bolt clamps it to engine , bit dodgy really as it could come off any moment , and as im goin to wales for a week i need a tempory fix , quick . idealy need replacing or a heli coil or sumfin . time is not on my side im plannin on fixin the bolt in permanantly wiv chemical metal then refitting tensioner wen it gon off .
wots ur ideas on this ? is there a better way of dealing with this ? thanks all
