Hello Group,
On my '98 300 Tdi Disco, the Oil dipstick "guide tube" has cracked and
broken in two.
It has broken immediately above where the mounting clamp wraps around it and
secures it to the engine block.

Is there a tried and tested method of repair (I thought about shortening the
dipstick to suit the now shorter tube :)), or does it need to be removed &
replaced. It appears to be an interference fit into the engine block. Is
this correct and if so how hard a job is it to remove and fit a new one?

Any suggestions considered helpful!
Cheers,

Chookie

Hi R&K

I had a dipstick tube that leaked, I think there is a "O" ring on the bottom
of the tube, and the tube is avalable as a spare part (well it is over here
in the UK) so its just a matter of pulling out the old one and pushing in
the new one !

Exactly this happened to me half way down the coast of Croatia.

A local mechanic - who appeared to have never touched a Disco before, and
was quite excited - simply pulled the tube out at the bottom with minimal
trouble, took it away and welded it back into one piece.

Charged me about a tenner.

Getting it back in was a pain, but two of us holding torches and shouting in
pigeon Russian and we managed it!

When I got home my local Landie specialist said he's seen it quite often and
there's a lot of stress at that point.

Firm rubber pipe slipped over and 2 jubilee clips as a quick fix if getting
OE parts is an issue.

Is it possible to cut a Jubille clip in half dril one end and secure / clamp
somewhere to the block / engine.. wrap the other end around the tube and
clamp up...then use the adjuster on the clip to get it just so. This doubled
up with the rubber hose should keep it in location but afford some movement
to get over the origional problem.
