I want to fit 2 300tdi discovery axles to my defender :(
(as the front's damaged and as i have both i can have disc brakes on the rear).
The question is on the rear axle is has the 'doghnut' type rubber ring and three bolt fixing to the rear diff, how do i connect it to the defender gearbox?
I presume the original discovery propshaft will be to long?

Your input would be greatly appreciated :):):)

Andy,
as the Disco axle has just a round tube & three lugs forming the pinion, i can't see how to change it other than removing the diff from the axle and then removing the pinion shaft?

ive got a 300tdi disco axle on mine. The snout was pulled out. I used a BIG socket, a pair of spanners to space it out a bit more, a long M8 i think bolt which threads into the middle of the snout, and then a nut and a washer on the bolt thread to wind down against the top of the socket and pull it out. Then, swap the flanges over.

You will probably find that your 4 bolt flange is not as deep from the mud shield ring as the 3 bolt one - in this case you MUST fit a spacer ring, which can be found in the old diff, under the flange. :)

If you don't, as i didn' at first, you WILL get horrendous vibrations on the overrun as the input bearing isn't held in place properly. As such it WILL knacker your diff in no time.

Gents,
Thanks very much, i cut off a piece of scaffolding tube so it was about an 1" higher than the centre boss. I then used some very thick 'repair' type M8 washers and with the good old 1/2" air gun wound a high tensile M8 Bolt in to the boss and hey presto!
Thanks agian,
Paul
