Some good advice is take it to someone who knows these engines, Get them to do some more tests for you, don't go back to your mate unless its to pick up his share of the repair bill. remember theres not just replacing the head gasket, the head needs checking, its not a cheap job if done right, but theres no shortcuts, buy a good gasket set , and if the head needs skimming and your keeping the motor get the valves re seated and de-coked etc. like i say get someone who know there stuff, no disrespect to your local mechanic but it may be worth asking him if he as a knowledge of Landys,

Good luck...

Totally agree with the above, you want a really good engine repair centre. Dont scrimp on Britpart cheap crap, buy genuine Land Rover, full top end gasket kit (Head gasket, exhauste and inlet manifold, oil seals etc etc). You will have to change the oil / oil filter as your sump will have water ingress that will damage the turbo as they need a good clean supply. Dont buy cheap again as your head will need to bed in, I use Castrol Magnatec on all my veichles, its the best. I would also change all drive belts etc whilst its off....makes sense. Its not going to be cheap I am afraid but if you do it properly she will last you out.

cheers for the advice gents. as far as I'm aware the local garage deals with a fair few defenders as theres alot out here in the local town. il see what the cost is and weigh it up. il be returning to the uk soon and my breakdown cover includes returning it to the uk so that may be the better option.

thanks again
