I wondered what the inside of the cyclone engine breather looked like ....

From that I can see how it is supposed to work. But it doesn’t explain why it doesn’t and I still Get oil on my air filter!

That because your engine is fecked!

Mine did the same, so fitted an oil catch tank, more trouble than it was worth, so routed breather pipe to under the brake servo, no snot no fumes and no oily air filter.
I also fitted a blank to the air filter stub.

The drain pipe on mine got blocked once.

Caused a whole load of issues. Things you wouldn't expect and I still don't understand. But when the pipe was unblocked the issues stopped.
 
Does that mean that you 'breath' onto the inner wing ?

Yes and no!

Yes it breathes into the inner wing, and no there is zero mess.
I did not believe it either, there was some initial oily water for a few days then nothing.
 
Does your cyclone outlet pipe not tap in to the air intake pipe between the filter and the turbo?

If a 19j turbo diesel air filter unit was used in any conversion to tdi the problem is they had the breather inlet on the wrong side of the filter resulting in contamination.
 
Looks like Miktdish has an L plate 300Tdi though.

I do.
Although it's a bitsa butchered together by Herefor4x4 from parts off a Series 3, a scrapped 200tdi 110 and other missmatched parts from thier extensive scrap heap.
It does have a genuine, 2014, LR refurbed 300tdi (short) engine though, which now i've replaced the injectors, FiP, Turbo, intercooler, alternator and most of the other ****ty bits they had fitted it's running a lot better.
The LT230's as slack as a slack thing in a slack place and the wear in the gearlever turret leads me to believe that the R380 is probably original (1994) and was owned by a proffesional porrige stirrer with aspirations to be the strongest man in Eign Hill.
Still fitting a new wiring loom (engine, dash and rear) as well as changing out the glass fuses for a 300tdi box has improved the electrics, of course I had to change the column switches and the dash lights etc.
I had to rebuild the airbox/heater so it actually works too, a similar story with the brakes tbh, fitting a brake balancer rather than just a splitter increased confidence no end.

The axels are ok :)

So does your cyclone vent in to the air intake before the air filter or, as in a standard 300Tdi, after? :)

After. The pipe runs to the back of the block and into the large pipe (elephants trunk) feeding the turbo.
Which TBH seems a bit bonkers to me as surely this means the turbo creates a negative pressure which sucks in the oil fumes from the rocker cover ?

I am thinking of following @lynall and simply venting to atmoshpere.

Yes, it causes a hell of a negative pressure. The turbo blows air something fierce!
If your engine is ok, then all that's going down that vent pipe is hot air with a hint of oil fragrance in it. I ran mine in to a catch can once and the square root of sod all came out of it.
