300tdi auto, diff lock not working

hi guys,
i am new to this site and offroading.
can any one help me please?
my father-in-law has a 300 tdi auto on R reg

we cant get it to go in diff lock for some reason (light doesnt even come on)

there isn't a lot of movement in the stick either? (well, not as much as my 200tdi manual) is that normal?

it goes in low and high range easy enough though
does the light have to be on for it to select diff lock?
is selection electronic?

can anyone give me some advice please????

so is it best to put diff lock on when rolling?
even with an auto box?

You can put difflock on and off at any speed as required.
High to Low and back you have to be barely moving for auto and (I think) stopped for manual

Diff lock should only be selected if all wheels are turning at the same speeds, so not on a corner or when a wheel is already slipping
High to low can be done completely on the fly in a manual, I can change hi/lo upto about 15mph in my auto now i'm well practiced, but when i first got the auto i had to stop to change without sounding like i'd left the transfer box on the road!

unfortunately it still doest work
i think theres somthing wrong with the transfer box
i will remove it and inspect
