Hi guys i have got myself a 300 tdi from my father for a good price the car went for its test today and passed not 1 advisory there is just one problem that is buggin me and that is white smoke when i start the vehicle also it has a fumy smell to it,

So i asked my Father for a bit of history about the vehicle and here is what he said

A couple of years ago the discovery broke down and the inner skin of the air intake pipe to the turbo ballooned and cut the air off thus filling the intercooler with oil and it also knackered the turbo

He then replaced the turbo with a second hand one and washed the intercooler out ,it was still smoking

Next he replaced the lift pump

Then he fiited a new sedimenter

Timing has been done by two garages

Checked all the fuel lines from the tank to the pump for air ingression also fiited a new sender unit as the pipes coming from the top looked a bit rusty

The best way to describe it is that when you rev it sounds like something is holding it back and white smoke with the fumes

My father has asked numerous mechanics but to no avail

If anyone could help it would be really appreciated

Regards Danny

How old is it?

May be worth getting new rubber hoses fitted and see if that helps.

Take the hose off the turbo (the one in the center, take a pic of it and see if its got oil in and in the hose. Make sure she is cold 1 st and see if the impelled spins freely with your finger. Check the waste gate is closed and the rod moves by hand (will move but lots of resistance don't force it)

Remove the intercooler and flush it out! Dose the yet valve if fitted still work (is it blocked open)

My main bet is the hoses.

Hope this helps

Indeed Disco dude, i assumed turbo/wastegate were fine saying he put another 1 on & also new hoses because of the balloned original, my 90 degree elbow from the turbo had a case of the inner core being seperate from outer, did make a difference when i replaced all mine :) will check this tomorrow to find out what truckerdan found.

hi guys checked all the pipes , wastegate etc they all see fine i have ordered some new injectors as famous four advised me to do so, i will try them and hopefully that will sort it out thanks again dan

Lets know how the injectors go as I have a similar problem:)

Possibly your glow plugs. Old diesels with no glow plugs smoke a lot (blueish white) on start up. Some engines just do it anyway - we had a sherpa with peugeot engine that always put out clouds of smoke when cold.

Bloody tired eyes last night forget to link this as a 'maybe' reference guide http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php

I read the table wrong :( MY BAD, looking at it with less tired eyes it could be a EGR problem according to the table

Thanks for that that table pyper if the injectors and heater plugs dont fix it will maybe have to look at the egr, i guess its one less thing to try will get there in the end hopefully, it does show on that table black and white smoke for an egr only seem to be getting white smoke though

I blanked off my EGR 2 years ago now, instant improvement IMHO, remember pulling away from junctions better, but ive done quite a bit of tinkering since then :)

Well if it is your EGR stuck open, the poor thing will be trying to run on exhaust fumes :(
Order a kit, fit it wont do no harm anyways :), just remember to soak those nice EGR bolts in WD-40 first.
