Got a water leak on my 95 300tdi, it appears to be leaking between the aluminium casting and the cylinder block behind the water pump, have done a search and can not find anything about the sort of repair job this involves, any help would be appreciated, I did change the water pump a while back and noticed rust on some of the longer bolts, are the threads of these supposed to be sealed where they enter the block, the couple pics attached show the red rust stain down the front of the block I can't see the exact point of the leak

Just as a further note:

The bolts clamping the P-gasket between the casting and the block are the three long ones you removed when doing the water pump.

Sometimes you are lucky and can get away with doing so without the gasket 'letting go' - I reckon I would always change the p-gasket when changing water pump just to be safe.

I used a smear of RTV sealant on both aspects of the gasket, as I really don't want to have to do it again.

The P gasket is the one between the new water pump and the ally casting ?, this leak in further back on the cast iron block, I been trying to load a couple pictures of the leak but not getting on very well, will try again

Yeah, as you've figured out no doubt now, there's a sandwich of gaskets:

Water Pump -> Water pump gasket -> Ally housing -> P-Gasket -> Block

PS You'll need ANOTHER water pump gasket too now for your trouble ;-)

I had this exact problem. Paddocks didn't list both gaskets, although I probably could have phoned up and sorted them out. John Craddocks tend to have a wider range of parts. I didn't fully understand the bits I needed to order so I phoned them up rather than doing it over the internet, it was hassle-free and all sorted.

Hi all,

Had the same problem with a 300tdi, water leaking from the rear of the pump housing (front of the block) so removed all as above and changed both gaskets. All cleaned and refitted, and hey presto, still leaking ?!?

Whilst the pump housing was off I checked the front core plug just in case, no evidence of leaking and no obvious faults. I'm at a loss now as for what to do next ?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks all.
