Morning all,
got a rrc 300tdi 94..
Well changed the starter motor(less than 3 months old)and its been ok,but i 've have had a strange fault appear,...ignition on ,turn key, starter doesn't 'kick out' to engage flywheel, but continues to turn motor, and won't stop!! turn ignition off, still going,.....quick as poss find a spanner in the dark to disconnect battery!!
The battery was a bit weak, but i don't understand whats going on!!i suspect it could be a relay playing silly buggers,so if anyone's got any ideas, especially which relay controls the starter,i would be most grateful,

Starter can't turn until it's kicked out. Most likely is failed one way clutch in bendix. And faulty starter. Solenoid sticking. Needs stripping or better still take it back from where you got it.

Thanks for your reply,
is the bendix part of the starter itself?....i 'll take it back, see whether i can get another,so there's more reason to never buy britpart again!! cheers

The bendix is the part that engages the flywheel ring gear. The starter is a pre engaged type. In other words when you turn the key the solenoid is activated throwing the bendix out into engagement with the ring gear. At the same time at the end of the solenoids stroke it closes the main contacts and starts the motor running. The bendix gear is attached to the motor shaft via a one way clutch. This is so as the engine starts it does not drive the starter motor. A common fault is this one way clutch failing, the starter engages spins but cannot drive because the clutch has failed.

Thank you very much for a brilliant explanation, much appreciated.
Happy Christmas:).....now where did i put that receipt??
