Anyone ever used a 300 tdi DPF or soot collector as a silencer?

Was thinking of knocking the wire mesh out of it, putting it in the system near the back and seeing if it will take out the high frequency sound and give it a nice growl sound.

I know it aint got baffles or a muffler so it will just change the sound rather than quiet it down,

No sound wave, engine performance or health and safety experts please:rolleyes::D

As far as I'm aware 300tdi's dont have DPFs,

If you mean the catalytic converters, I' unsure if the new MOT regs apply to Pre 2000 Vehicles so I'd hold off until its made clearer

Should have made it clearer, I mean the first box in a Disco 300 tdi system which is neither a cat nor a dpf but just a soot collector, well the one I took off is anyway, just wire screening inside.

The first 'box on late 300Tdi's is a 2 stage cat, a simple thing that is best got rid of. No problem with the MOT as not every 300Tdi left the factory so fitted for some reason. The next box is an expansion chamber with little in it so the gasses can expand. The last box actually does the silencing, though not that much.

Best advice is, replace front pipe and cat with one from a 300Tdi defender, get rid of the centre box, you can get a pipe off fleabay and just have the the back box. This can sound tasty. The alternative is to do what I did, allow the back box the rot off and fall off somewhere down a green lane in Devon. Thought it was sounding good when going up hill!!!!!!

the middle box is fairly straight thru, its a perforated pipe and the box is stuffed full of what looks like rockwool stuff, quite densly packed, so not asure if it would allow for much expansion.
Ive taken this one out, and kept the small rear silencer, nice sound but not too over the top.

Both middle and rear boxes on disco 1 are mufflers, that is straight through with wadding to absorb the sound.

Just wondering if an expansion box without the wadding would change the sound for the better without silencing it.
