Very, a sock will pull apart quickly and get sucked in - I'd only use a proper filter. No way to bodge up the factory airbox with some pvc from the garden center / shed or something is there? (if you cant get a cone filter cheap)

Have you ever tried to stall the engine by sealing off the inlet?

This is how I check to see if the snorkel is sealed correctly when checking other peoples cars if asked for pay and plays etc. Amazing how many engines will carry on running when the snorkel pipe is sealed off. I would not want to use my hand to seal it. I used a hard cover haynes manual once and it created enough vacuum to tear the book cover.

Cheers

Well, got everything else bolted on. Tappets set, new anti-freeze in, new oil, oil filter and air filter. Still got the new fuel filter to go on!
She started up ok, but fair bit of smoke coming out the back.

Tested the inlet to the air manifold with my hand and it had a canny suck on it :) However, I thought a sock might cope, so jubilee clipped one on.

Problem was when I put a few revs on the sucked pulled in enough to open up the weave and leave holes big enough for particles to get through. So, I'll go on eBay and see if I can find some sort of filter to rig up. You can all say I told you so!
Disconnecting the turbo to FIP pipe made no difference to the smoke coming out of the back. Don't suppose the turbo was spooling up much anyway, to affect the FIP.
So, have to find a filter before I can take it out on the road.
The smoke looks worse in real life than it does in the video!
Anyone have any thoughts as to what's causing the smoke, unburnt fuel or oil? To be honest, it's smoking a lot more with the turbo off, so hopefully it's fuel!

Turbo wont spool up just free revving with stock fuelling setup, but remember to leave it disconnected once the turbo is disconnected.

I wouldn't worry about the smoke until after you start driving it again, could be oil from assembly burning off, or just moisture in the exhaust as it's colder out now. Look at it again once it's out driving and fully warmed up

Yes, I'm probably being impatient! On tick over there was nothing, so might be a good sign :) I can wishfully think

I was thinking, with the turbo venting to atmosphere - ie on to the inner wing. It's not going to build up any pressure, so would any pressure be built up to go down the pipe to the FIP?

I've just bought one of these to rig up next weekend

That's a spot on observation. Scratch that disconnection point i may have made several times

Better than the engine munching on that sock!

Just occurred to me after I disconnected it :)

Absolutely! The sock was ok on tick over, but when I put some revs on the sock got drawn in to a cone in to the inlet manifold. Very quickly the sock was stretched so much the weave opened up to show at least 1mm square holes. Worth a try I suppose, it's a learning experience. But, I do wish I'd looked on eBay earlier  Tried the local motor factors last weekend but they didn't have anything. Should have gone to eBay

Air filter arrived but needed to adapt intercooler pipe to make it fit.

That's a strip of rubber pond liner.

This is how I set it up

You can see how much oil was lying in the bottom intercooler pipe.
Cleaned inner wing and put the little things now intercooler pipe on turbo to direct air to wingS

All ready to go for a spin but the bonnet wouldn't shut. So I'll have to do the long drive doon to the Toon and go to Halfords. See if I can get something there

Wahey! Proper yobbo filter setup!

Pity about the bonnet now not playing ball, but hopefully that wing becomes a smeary mess within a few hundred miles

Yeah, proper boy racer style :D
Revving it from the FIP with my hand in the way of the turbo outlet showed nothing on my hand. Switched engine off and turbo was still stone cold so must be when it's hot that it passes oil. Defo passes oil it's just the amount that's the issue.

Halfords had no intercooler pipe of any description

could it be i wonder the oil getting too hot, thinning out and getting past the seals ?

Could this issue be related to the oil thermostat being closed shut in some way ? having been run in summer did you notice more smoke on hot days ?

Maybe worth investigating

New to me but sounds very interesting. Where the feck is the oil thermostat

Feck me. I'll be having one of those, cos mine would never have been replaced. However, if that sticks shut I've no idea if the turbo seals can't cope with the hotter oil?

Normally they stick open once they're wasted, same principle as your coolant stat just smaller - one hand on the oil cooler inlet and one on the outlet once warm soon shows if it's buggered (i.e outlet should be cooler than the inlet but not cold) . Doubtful it would cause excessive oil consumption, even if the rest of the cooling system was shot, especially with a decent semi synth or a fully synthetic oil. If you do take it off the o-ring on the housing will need changing as well, and make sure you fit the correct one as the removed part of the housing is a very weak raw ally casting and snaps its wings if you even slightly force it on re-installing a marginally too big seal

Yep, once it thins - also possible it wont be as bad with the turbo under very little load

Basically a given nowadays there wont be what you need at halfords, does seem the prices are not quite as dreadful as they used to be mind - only had to give up a bit of liver last time i was in there rather than a whole kidney

All good information. So, they're likely to stick open. Always used semi or fully synth oil.
Can't remember any threads by folk suffering big oil consumption and the solution being a carped oil cooler stat. Good thinking though!
