As most would know the 300tdi is a 2.5L, but here in New Zealand, we have a lot of Nissan Safaris & Toyota Land Cruisers. These are powered by 4.2L Turbo Diesels, I was just wondering how the 300tdi went in something like a Discovery. Because of the great weight of the vehicle, do these have enough power?

Cheers

They don't break any land speed records for sure, but they put out pretty decent power, especially with the FIP tweaked. What I do love about them is their durability and longevity. Mine is still going strong with no major issues over the years. On its second FIP, but aside that, never been opened up for any major surgeries other than the times the cam belt have been replaced.... Had a 70 series land cruiser pickup for a few years, and I have to say that the pull and sound of that legendary 4.2 straight six is unmatched. However on the move, a well tuned 300tdi on boost would give it a run for its money.

What companies distribute aftermarket/upgraded items?
so just to get it clear, upgrading the FIP lets more fuel in, so there fore more power etc.?

Hi there, yes they put out well enough power looked after and tweaked slightly, esp the Manuel ones, I have just sold my 50th anniversary 300 tdi Manuel discovery, and I have only moved the lobed foot in the pump 45 degrees and it gave my mates 3.5 v8 90 a run for its money, on 194K!!! And it was soo reliable, but wanted a change! I have seen tdi discovery that have been played about with keep up with v8 classic range rovers! Not a joke!!! I rate tdi's alot, durable, reliable, and easy to work on! Why they didn't make a straight six or v6 version???

A Discovery isn't really that much heavier. Suspect a 110 weighs more.

Tdi's will go ok and are easy to 'tweak' at home, which make them feel like they go a lot better. They aren't speedy, but sufficient.

As for the Jap diesels. I think some of the older ones aren't always turbo charged and even those that are, don't always make massive amount of power. Although probably quite a bit of low end torque.

So despite the displacement different, the performance isn't always such a massive gap apart.
