300 tdi oil filter housing gasket repacement, how difficult is it?

I have an oil leak which looks to be coming from the oil filter housing to main block connection and was wondering how easy it is to replace and whether there are any tips in doing so? Is there a sequence of getting to the connection bolts?

I would advise you download the Rave manual - a search on here will find a link for you. If you're sure its the gasket that has gone, it shouldn't be too much of a job, just use good quality bits, and possibly depending on vehicle age, it is probably worth using new bolts too - cos they are cheap compared with your time to do it again

Thanks for that. I have had a look at the manual but it does not say whether I have to remove the injector pump to do it. Is this the case

Doubt the IP will have to come off. It might be tight in there, especially on a 'fender. Bolts may be more accessible through the wheel arch with a long extension .... ?

Plus, IME, Rave is pretty good, ( though not foolproof ), at telling you what's necessary to do job "X", so if it doesn't say remove "A" as part of job "X", then you probably don't have too.

I removed the oil filter housing from my 300 tdi as i needed to move it to fit the engine in a series and you do not need to remove the IP
Mine came off pretty easy only four bolts

Give it a good clean with gunk or similar first to confirm it is leaking from that joint. Oil cooler pipes and filter canisters have been known to leak in the past and will mist the area with oil which then looks like a leak. Also make sure there isn't an old oil seal left on the oil filter spigot which can stop the filter sealing properly.
