hi im new to this site not only because i need abit of tech help but i was going to join anyway because i love landys, anyway i will cut to the chase ive got a 300 tdi 90 and its broke it will go into gear fine but when i let the clutch up its just grinding its not throwing it out of gear just making a noise, i have tried hi and lo and diff lock and nothing happens it still goes into gear in each mode but continues to grind :( any help on whats up with it would be fantastic because i havent a clue im thinking transfer box due to no drive?

Thanks oli

transfer box, unless the linkage on the hi-n-lo lever has broken and it is stuck somewhere in the middle that is what mine did take the drivers seat out and the plate and you will see if the linkage is ok or not

sounds like the clutch plate has broken up to me:rolleyes:

cheers for the replies i dont mean to sound think but would it still go into gear if the clutch plate is knackered? because its going into gear no problem just when the clutch is up its making this grinding sound instead of moving :(

oli what you say makes some sense actually, although it could be the sprung/splined centre part that has come away from the friction disc.

Can you select a gear with the clutch up - if you can, then its probably your transfer box.
Or, if you select a higher gear and bring the clutch up, does it clatter faster? If it clatters at the same speed then its gonna be the clutch or main box, if faster then its gotta be after the main box.

Are you sure that your difflock is engaging, i.e. the light comes on? If you want to check, engage difflock and a gear, and look under the car (with the engine on) as this will show if it is a box problem and difflock (appears to) work, or if difflock wont select properly and you have a broken half shaft.

hi boydy the diff lock light is coming on when engaged and its does seem to make the grinding faster and louder as i go up through the box all gears are selectable the best way i can describe is that its like having no drive shafts connected to make it move, im presuming at this point im going to have to get a new transfer box do you know of anyone who supplies um cheap? ive just been made redundant so the works guna have to be done with a haynes manual, they always say a driver should know how there machines work tho ay, having said that im not looking forward to it is it a big job? first thing tomoz im going to have the plat up in the cab and have a look to see whats going on and refer to the help above.

thanks again

could be the end of the mainshaft, the splines can wear but not that common on a 300. collapsed bearing possibly and gears misaligned?
take the round plate off the back of the transfer box , take the input gear out and check the splines on it and the main box. If ok start the engine and go through the gears watching the mainshaft. If its ok then its definately the transfer box.

What he said.

If its of any help, I am going to be changing both my gearbox and my transfer box in the next week with a bit of luck, ive got a reverse fault with my main box and im taking the opportunity to put a higher geared disco transfer box on. If it turns out that you want my transfer box, then you are welcome to it - if you don't mind i will have to ask for what my disco one cost me, but this shouldn't be more than £50 tops.

I have heard of mainshaft wear, but as above the R380 'box (reverse right and down, 'under' 5th) this is much rarer.

I am not a gearbox pro, and don't claim to be really, all I have is a working knowledge of it.

The transfer boxes are not very complicated though, they have no synchro to worry about, and only two speeds, so they are very simple internally, and all the spares are about.

From what I have gathered also, swapping the entire unit is pretty easy, ask me in a few days an ill tell you!

Let me know if you want/need my x-fer box.

One other thing you can do - put a powerful magnet on the drain plug of each gearbox and run the engine in gear for a minute or two, then switch off and drain the oil. The magnet will attract all the steel filings to the drain plug, and you will be able to see which box has taken the most beating by the metal soup. It does however sound transfer related if it 'speeds up' with higher gears.

Thats good of you mate im more than happy to cover the cost of your new box, hoping now that this is the problem! to be totally honest though ive never even used my defender for what it was built for its a real chelsea tractor and to have it break is gutting, especially when it start and runs fine mite just cut a hole in the floor and run instead.
Joking aside though thanks for all the help, you will have to pm me ya details to pick the box up etc thats when youve done the job of course and there isnt any real rush so let me know when ya ready. thanks again

im in staffordshire uttoxeter to be precise but dont not fear i will arrange transport unless you fancy a drive of course. wink wink ;) .

Im going to check all the above points because i will feel a rite penis if i start taking off the transfer box and it isnt that. i was twenty one yesterday and after this breaking today i feel 60 already.

mate im 19 and ive broken more stuff than a transfer box... I wudn worry about it!

Its not the end of the world.

Staff... May be able to find an excuse for that, we will see. Let me know what you find, and ill let you know when mine is out. May even be able to help you fit a new box if you want.

sounds good to me i live on a farm so ive got tons of space i havent got an abudance of tools but shud have enuf to do the job, i will keep ya posted on what i come across, keep my name down for your box though, and if you cant get my way i will gladly pick it up,.

By the time i was 20 i'd put 4 engines in my series, 3 engines in my mini and written off my 200tdi hybrid. Not to mention the bikes i've had and blown up!
I'm forever fixing things. I'm only 24 but feel about 54!
