Hi All

My 300TDi Defender starts okay, a small puff of dark smoke usually comes out (nothing major). I live on a hill and if I drive down the hill, from cold, and lift off the accelerator towards the bottom for engine breaking a HUGE amount of white smoke bellows out the exhaust :frown: After its done it once, its fine and completely smoke free.

If I dip the clutch whilst its smoking, it stops straight away.

I've changed the glow plugs but not yet ventured to the injectors - Mainly as the cost of them I didn't want to do it if not needed...although I think this could be a cause??

I've also checked the hoses and just changed the Intercooler hoses, so sure its not them.

Could someone please let me know if changing the injectors could solve the smoking issue? And if so, is it a DIY job?

By the way, although it doesn't cause issues, I'm sure its not normal and cant be doing any good to other components...or my fuel economy which is pretty poor.

Many Thanks
Stu:)

Cheap things to change are air filter and fuel filter - can sometimes help

If not, engine compression test would be my next check before thinking about testing injectors

Mine does just the same, like you say once it's done it when cold it doesn't do it again. I've often thought of getting injectors reconditioned as it's done 200k and works hard for a living but still haven't got around to it.
Let us know if you find an answer.

Thanks all for the thoughts. It's also been suggested to me that it might be the cyclone breather, so I plan to change that today as it was only £12. I'll also run some injector cleaner through the next tank of fuel.

I've read the thread posted above (thanks for the link) and it seems their problem is continues smoke - mines only when I lift off the accelerator pedal.

I've already changed air and fuel filter as part of a service a few hundred miles ago and it's still doing it.

If all else fails maybe I will have to replace the injectors - just don't really want that expense at the moment

White smoke is 9 times out of 10 unburnt fuel I had this issue with my 300 disco. From cold It was gutless going up hill and (as you mentioned) chucked out white smoke coming back down under engine breaking. This lasted for a few mins each time from cold. I did a leak test on injectors and found 2 were knackered found a new set on ebay incl new copper sealing rings and after that she was beaut to drive again, cold or hot

Thanks Dover, sounds like you had the exact same issue as me.

I've changed the cyclone breather with no positive effect, so it's looking more likely to be an injector change.
