Its time for a new exhaust on my 1996 300TDI.

I am told I might as well de cat it. What are the benefits of this?

I need to by the lot. Can anyone recommend the best place to buy?

benefits are that it is cheaper and you may squeeze some more ooomph out of it, but your unlikely to notice it. I take it yours is a late 96? if you have a picky MOT man, he may pick up that you dont have a cat and fail you, unlikely but worth mentioning. mine didnt have a cat, pretty sure post 96 have cats as standard.

any exhaust place will do the work for you. if your doing it yourself, get the parts from paddocks and do the sections yourself.

Thanks. My buddy who recommended de catting is my MOTer!

I have had issues in the past about it being '96 and a changeover year for a few bits.

I guess i'll check against VIN numbers.
 
All you need is the standard down pipe about £20 including vat from paddocks,
I did mine and have removed the egr assembly as well as replaced the centre silencer(well only one on my 90) witha cherry bomb
 
Make sure you get the correct tailpipe as the rear bracket is welded on in a different position, there isn't a problem getting either but just make sure you get the correct one.

When sourcing your new pipe make sure it is the same CSA as the original as some aftermarket systems (a well know supplier of SS systems spings immediately to mind) make them out of smaller bore tubing and that will not do the gas-flow any good at all.
Although I have a SS down-pipe & straght-through centre-pipe I bought an OE (mild-steel) tailpipe. The front & centre pipes cost me about £100 together but a SS tail-pipe was going to cost about £200, I did some searching around and found that the Britpart tail-pipe was made by Bosal (a well know & respected manufacturer of OE exhausts) and matched the original exactly. At £35 it was also a lot cheaper and lasting about 5-years a time I could replace it several times over before matching the cost of a SS tail-pipe.

the part you need is esr2297, it is the front down pipe that does 200tdi and 300 tdi without the cat.
The rest of the exaust is different depending on the vin.
I know a few guys who have changed it to the later type exaust and just got a straight through pipe for the silencer
 
Hi steve, i'm just about to buy a de cat front pipe, did you go through with it? i already have my 300tdi rear de cat'ed and it is quite loud... does it make it a lot louder?
 
Im also looking on getting a new exhaust for mine how does it effect the emisions if you blank the EGR off and de-cat i just want it to be a bit louder :)

was going to see if a company loacal to me could make one for it who made my motorbike exhaust.
 
emmisions makes no difference for the MOT, its only deisel particulates they test for anyhoo, depends on what year yours is to how tight the testing is AFAIK.

ive done my EGR and cat, TBH cant say ive noticed a difference in noise, getting rid of the middle silencer, or going stright through might make a difference though.
(my mid box is going when i find a sensible priced alternative, or I learn to weld and do it myself.)
There is only one CAT, its the first box, on the downpipe, think it then depends if you have one or more silencers.

yeah i will deffo go strait through the middle take out all the silencer box's :D

and want like a black end can type look popin out the back sounds strange but hard to explane:eek:

Ahhh that was it! the middle silencer, haha it is quite loud as it is but i don't mind the current noise would rather a V8, i thought i may as well buy some new parts while the chassis is getting swapped... i wanted to put a V8 in but im 17 and insurance would... well wouldn't insure me!

haha never mind insurance were you getting fuel money from you spring chicken? :eek:
 
haha i get around 21 mpg, and drive to college every day! been working since i was 12, and all of my weekly wages gets spent on my car! the chassis has been helped by parents i think its my 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st birthday present early! haha
 
I've removed the cat and centre box on my td5. It's not an mot fail. It does make it a bit louder, but it sounds great:D I fitted a full Janspeed system to one of my 300tdis that was lovely but expensive:)
