Help Needed.
My vehicle: 1997 300tdi auto non-EDC with EGR with air con.
Problem: After my mechanic (not LR specialist) fitted new timing belt engine can start / idle normally BUT
(1) Without air con running - can only rev up to 3000 rpm with throttle depressed.

(2) With air con running - can only idle with throttle depressed NO throttle response whatsoever (cable and fuel pump levers move but no revving up).

Appreciate urget advice!

I would think he's got the cam belt fitted wrong. One or two teeth out would probably let it run but if the pump timing is out, no power. Running the aircon is enough load to stop it revving up at all.
Get him to check the timing.

Sounds like cause and effect to me. My old petrol ran (just) when the timing chain jumped a couple of teeth 'cos the tensioner cog broke up and it sounds like a similar symptom - get the valve timing checked ASAP and if it's wrong sack your mechanic. It's the sort of job even the 'prentice should get right!

Hi guys
Thanks for the feedback. Nothing catching throttle and kick down cable seems right. A con problem resolved by re vacuuming system and gas refill. Motor revs still sluggish. Getting the mechanic to re-check timing as per advice. Hopefully no other problems.

Opened up timing cover, all alignment marks checked out.. Flywheel gearbox bottom plate markt at tdc Crankshaft keyway lined up with cover plate mark, camshaft pulley line up with cover plate mark, fuel pump pulley pin way line up with flange hole.. Botled it up same results.. Sluggish

Going to move belt 1 cog inwards on fuel pump pulley to see if ir solve problem.

Moving 1 cog up on fuel pump pulley produces too much white smoke on idling. Resetted as according to overhaul manul .. Aligned up markings at (1) Crenkshaft key (2) camshaft pulley mark and place pin in fuel pump pulley then loosen up fuel pump pulley boss nut to reset pulley midway between its adjustment points and aSsembled up timing cover drive belt etc.

Started up with no smoke but also no power. Adjusted fuel pump power screw/thottle cable/ kick down cable / idling screw/ boost diaphragm/ smoke screw on boost dia assy until engine runs better.

Lesson Learnt: Always lock fuel pump position as per overhaul manual if it needs to be remove fr mountings
