I have fitted a new cambelt kit today and now the engine wont start. It drove to the spot that it is still sat in and was running fine up until removal. It turns over but wont fire and it has a cloud of grey/white smoke coming out the exhaust. The only thing I can think of is that when I was putting the belt around the crank shaft pully it moved slightly so I gave it one complete turn until the woodruf key was at 12 oclock again. I have reconected the fuel cut of switch wire, there are no bits left over spare and all of the timing marks line up. Diesel pump locked at 11 Oclock cam and case marks line up and woodruf at 12 oclock. It was fitted before dinner and I have been stood in the rain until now trying to sort out what could be wrong. The engine was turned over several times by hand before attempting to start it on the key.
 
The grey/white smoke is unburnt diesel, your timing is way off.

I would not try running it anymore incase you damage valves, pushrods etc.
 
Every thing lines up tho. Engine turns over freely by hand????? dont get it at all..... now ****ed off wet and running out of fags. The only thing I can think is the crank shaft being rotated 1 complete turn had somthing to do with it but I just dont know.
 
Another thought... How do you check that the diesel pump is in correct alignment for both cam and casing marks lineing up and woodruf at 12 oclock? As the cam belt was going on I managed to cut my arm open on the drill that was locking the diesel pump and the drill came out. As I was on the verge of the belt going on I riggeled it on anyway with out the drill being in the pump hole. When the belt was fitted I tryed to put the drill back in and when woodruf was at 12 oclock the pump locked at about 9 oclock so I removed the belt made sure everything was lined up and turned the pump until the drill bit went back in at 11 oclock and re fitted the belt. The more I think about it the more I think that the diesel pump is out of time with the engine. What a shocking day and a very bad first diesel cam belt experience:mad: Help me Im a tit!
 
err, doesn't the crank turn twice for one revolution of the pump?
not 100% sure, but I'm sure I read somewhere that you need to turn the crank 2 complete revolutions if you do that.
 
Another trick, is to split the old belt in half with a stanley knife. Push the remaining half of the old belt to the back of the pulleys, then slide the new belt halfway on to the front of the pulleys, before finally cutting off the remaining half of the old belt and pushing the new belt on the rest of the way. That way the timing can't move.
 
Thats what I was thinking about the crank shaft and hoping it was. I made sure the diesel pump was locked and positioned the second time round and couldnt get my head round the how many times things turn. If thats right then the diesel is being injected on the power stroke rather than the inlet stroke of the engine and then shot out the exhaust. I think it may well be belt off again turn the crank one turn again and refit belt tommorow.
 
Scrap the I turned the crankshaft all the way around bollox I mentioned priviously. You cant do that as at some point pistons are going to hit valves as I just discovered turning crank with a ratchet. Where I stand now is cam shaft and crank shaft alligned so the only thing im not 100% on is the injection pump position. How can I tell if the pumps in the right place?
 
I have now tryed turning the diesel pump one complete revolution then locking it and refitting the belt incase it was out but it still wont start?? How easy is it to bend the push rods? Could it feel like a compresion stroke and then bend them. I need help fast as the Landy is suposed to be towing the caravan on holiday Sat 12th so Im pretty well screwed at the moment. Im going to re set the diesel pump how it was before and refit the belt if no one has any ideas and then take it to the garage to be sorted but if its a head off job then im going to have to borrow money from the bank or somthing to have it done cos I have no money which was the reason for me fitting the belt in the first place.
 
I have returned the diesel pump back to it origional position and locked it. Cam belt back on and once again all marks are lined up and it started this time. There is a large cloud of white/grey smoke when its running which suggests that the timing is out but all marks line up? could one of the push rods be damaged and the engine still run? At least now it will hopefully drive down the road to the diesel specialist garage. Is driving it ill advised?? Having it collected for a 1mile trip would cost me more money I dont have.:mad:
 
All you got to do is, line the timing marks up lock them in postion. Take the belt off a turn the cam 360 degress the oppersite way you did before and the timing should be right.
 
2 turns on the crank equal one turn for the cam always turn the crank twice before trying to start or theirs a possibility you will bend your valves if no lined up correctly. Dan
