I never noticed any significant increase in mpg when I used to run mine with out the viscous fan!
300 tdi auto only does 22 mpg

I have had 200 and 300Tdi, manual and auto - IMV:
It's 2 tons and brick-shape but capable, comfortable, affordable and acceptable performance, 22 mpg is probably not bad and better than some smaller 4x4s.
Remember, Landys have a built-in design feature of breaking down periodically in order to save you having to put fuel in until you've fixed it

I have had 200 and 300Tdi, manual and auto - IMV:
- 200Tdi slightly better mpg than 300 Tdi
- manual 10 mpg better than auto
- removing viscous fan slightly better but on my calculations not pay back the cost of leccy fan for a few years
- MTs 10-20% worse mpg than road tyres
- carrying round loads of gear makes negligable difference
- driving style makes big difference, more difference to manual than auto
- low tyre pressure makes significant difference - check pressure regularly

Try leaving it in 3rd instead of drive when driving round town and build your speed up slowly.Teflon posted a lengthy thread on this .Do a search "auto box overdrive."My 98 import 300 tdi auto can only squeeze 22 miles out of one costly gallon of juice irrespective of my driving style. It has just been serviced, de-catted, EGR removed and has more power than when I aquired it, but no better economy. Has anyone got any suggestions for improving my economy? I am currently thinking of removing the auto box, but I know this will be expensive and troublesome. Could it be an EDC problem?
Thanks for all your advice. Everything seems OK mechanically and car is well serviced. Running 235/70 R16s with heavy road bias. I will try to drive in 3rd up to 50, but am considering replacing auto box with a manual. How much work does this involve? The car is in great nick so reluctant to sell it. Besides, I love driving it, just makes me think when my works van gets 58mpg.

I bet its crap off road though?
To be fair, most people seem to be getting low to mid 20's so I just accept it now, if I want better economy I just use my bike.

I seem to get about 23 mpg round the houses - I can travel the 12 miles to work without hitting top gear ie I never top 50 mph (or at least I could until I was made redundant on Friday but thats another story!!).
My Dad runs a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin petrol auto. He complains of only getting 25 mpg - 29-30 on a run. If you compare the size of the two vehicles I think I get the better deal

I tried leaving my auto in 3 instead of drive [under 50 mph]and got 24.3 mpg with a lot of town driving and a bit motorway, viscous fan removed. It certainly drove better and felt a lot more responsive.
