I have a Discovery 3.9i (1995). 75,000 miles. Does this engine suffer from
the cylinder liner problem? The reason I ask is that a while ago it was
using a little water but that seemed to have stopped.
The engine has always been smooth and quiet (although not as powerful as my
last 3.9i Range Rover).
Today, started as normal, nice and quiet. Drove for 40 miles along the
motorway at approx 80mph, stopped at traffic lights a bit later and when I
pulled away there was an awful clatter that sounded like it was coming from
the rear of the right bank of cylinders.
Revved the engine and the clatter got faster with engine speed then tended
to die away.
Left car for a while so it cooled down, and when I started it, it was quiet
again, drove back along motorway and at the other end it was noisy again.
Could this be the liner that is slipping when hot?
Help!
