3.9 red line

Hello chaps and chapess, dose any one out there know the rev limit fora 98, 3.9 v8 disco engine, i yes i know some say youre not supposed to drive a landy like this but hey its a v8 in a 90 with mid box removed and it rocks, i just dont want to damage engine by constant over revin/thrashing.

I rarely rev mine over 5000 - no point.
When you hear valves bounce or it goes bang you've found your limit!

6750rpm on mine, but I think the cam is slightly spikier than the standered Land Rover ones. Although taking it past 6250-6500rpm is pretty much a fruitless exercise.

SEAC RV8's, (Andy Rouse built), go up to 7500rpm I'm told.

peak power is 4750rpm so goign over 5000rpm pointless as the power drops off with the standard LR V8

peak torque is like 2500 ish so off road pointless going way way above, it depends on your engine and how it was looked after. As all engines are looked after differently each is unique in what it will take before it goes bang.

I had a tuned renault 5 turbo once that would hit 8k without blowing up but it was rebuilt with the best bits money could buy at the time.

my 4.0 would deliver power too about 5250rpm then drop away...

OK book figures are max power at 4,500, red line at 4,750, and the ecu fueling map wont let you rev it much past that anyway.

Orthadox wisdom suggests that the RV8 is 'at the limit' at around 5K on hydraulic lifters, and if you regularly go above that you need to be building with solid lifter valve train...

There are people that argue, and there are 'lazy tappets' that dont hydraulic lock until about 3K so you can use a slightly more pointy lump stick in them.... personally I'm not a fan of the lazy tappet or reving hydralics beyond limit, they have a habbit of jamming!

The TVR motors used lightweight, and I believe longer hydraulic tappets that extended the reliable rev range to near 6K, and some have taken 'built' motors with these up to around 7-8K with varying degrees of reliability..... which is opening a can of worms and asking for opinions not demanded!

What you want to know is how high to rev a 'stock' Land-Rover 3.9, and the answer is, shouldn't actually go much over 4,750 on the standard fuel map, but of played with to get beyond that, I'd try not to go much over 5k for very long, very often......
