3.9 in a Defender - smells of fuel

I have a 3.9 fitted to my 90, still on carbs with LPG.

Running on LPG all is fine, for the first time in weeks, I ran out of LPG and had to run on Petrol.

First thing I noticed was the extra power, couldn't help keeping the pedal on the floor. Second thing I noticed was the smell of petrol - quite strong.

Wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

The carbs were from a 3.5, should they have been modded? - I had the same problem though on the 3.5 engine.

Would changing the air filter help, would a K&N help?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

mine smells of petrol also running on 4 barrel carbs think its just the nature of the beast

I hate it when this happens. Smell of fuel is actually a fuel leak.

The flexible part of the hose was a little perished where I couldn't see it.

Yep, interesting, the splits were on the underside of the pipe. From the top they look OK.

I shouldn't have fixed it, now it doesn't smell of petrol, I've been driving around all day on Petrol, with my foot hard on the pedal.

God it sounds great, looks like I'll have to send my Greenpeace membership back - ho hum.
