O.K. O.K I know there is all sorts of info out there on this one. Sticky oil pressure relief valve, crud in your pick up, worn pump gears but what if there are none of these problems but you still have no oil pressure??

Well it happened to me. The first part of the problem was indeed the sticking oil pressure relief valve. Cheap as chips and a doddle to change. While I was at it I thought a filter and oil change might be just as well, while I'm there.

So, I put it all together, filled her up with oil, removed king lead and cranked the engine to prime the pump. I hear the sucking of air through teeth, you should fill your oil pump with petroleum jelly or it won't prime" (only if there is something wrong!!).

So no pressure. Odd I thought. I injected oil in to the pump with an oil syringe, still the red light wouldn't go out. Decided to remove dizzy and attack pump drive with drill - no result. Very very odd. There is a new pressure relief valve, new oil and having had the sump off just a couple of weeks before was pretty sure the pick up was good.

To remove any question or doubt, I dropped the sump (again). Pick up pipe securely in place and the screen, clean as a whistle. So here is the odd bit. A friend of mine suggested I should put the old oil filter back on - having checked the system through and not getting any pressure he said it is very rare but not unknown for a new filter to be iffy. I changed the filter, we placed a clear plastic tub full of oil under the pick up, my friend did the honours with an electric drill and hey presto, oil light went out, oil came through the crank in all the right places and the oil pump had devoured about half to three quarters of a litre of slippery stuff in no more than one or two seconds.

So, hope you find that of use. I couldn't believe it when all was right by putting the old filter on.
