3.6AMP Battery Drain

The 200tdi 90 has developed a battery drain. I've put a multimeter in series with the battery it shows 3.6Amps of a load, I pulled the fuses one by one but the drain is still there. I notice two leads on the +ve terminal a heavy one which I take goes to the starter motor and a much lighter one, I've disconnected this smaller cable as well - still no difference. Does this smaller cable go to the alternator? Any help appreciated.

Only really needs one cable going from the positive to the starter. Is that with the engine running? Perhaps your alternator is goosed

I appreciate that one lead goes to the starter just wondering if the other lead goes to the alternator or not. If it is a feed from the alternator then by having it disconnected that would maybe prove that the alternator is OK as I still have the 3.6amp drain.

is the battery charge dropping with it completly disconected?

Shouldnt need a cable going from alt to battery as far as im aware. Mines has a cable from battery to starter and starter to alternator. Check the output from the alt with just the ignition on then with the engine starter. The first should read about 12v and with the engine on should read roughly 14.4v. If it does then the alt will be charging fine and i wouldnt imagine is drawing any amps

The drain is with the battery connected without the engine running, obviously no drain when the battery is disconnected.

thats not allways the case,fooked batterys wont hold charge and do discharge

I'm not hung up on this other lead going from the battery as it does not have any effect on the drain when its disconnected, it looks like a factory fit - I just wondered what it fed, but I'm still no further on in tracking down this drain, 3.6A is quite a load whatever it is, and this is with the ignition off!!

OK - Pulled the connector off the alternator and the drain disappears so looks like a new alternator required. That leads to another question, I have an alternator off a 300tdi disco can it be modified to fit as a replacement, the pulley has to be changed also the wiring to it is by terminals not the multiplug.

that could be 100amps instead of 60 or so ,wack it on and get it lined up,why not.

Thas what I think too but I need to work out where the wires go as mine was a multiplug this ones bolt on individual terminals. Any ideas?
