P.S. I realised after I posted, what I had assumed was the flapper was actually the throttle - the fuel pump did run with the flapper held open.

Well done. Might be worth considering a set of new leads as well. Check the inside of the dizzy cap for condensation & clean its exterior surfaces and the end of the coil where the king lead goes. Dirt & damp can cause issues.
If you remove the rotor arm you must press down on the reluctor - the 8 pointed star shaped thing under it - or you can disengage the auto advance/retard mechanism in the bottom of the dizzy & it won't run at all. Don't use the type of rotor arm that has the metal strip riveted to the plastic.
