Hey guys, I need a GM gearbox guru to help me. Been to see a nice 05 L322. Looks great, gearbox changes fine, but sometimes at low speeds I felt a rumble as if it had changed up a gear. Feels like noise strips on motorway. The guy selling says he always drives it in sport mode to avoid the rumble. I confirmed this on the test drive. Had a gearbox change 30k miles ago. Is this a sign of failure or just a normal thing?.. I know these gearboxes are made of chocolate, but was wondering how common this is or if it could be something else?..

The owner also had a gearbox flush done a couple of months ago. I’m not a huge fan of these flushes, as they don’t often change the filter.

if it was a recon box and the valve block was not changed for a sonex one the box may well be on its way out again, others will know more than me.

That’s what I thought. No mention of Sonnax anywhere on the invoice. Done in 2016, by a local garage, so not hopeful it’s been done properly and more than likely it’s on its way out again

Just checked my invoice and that doesn't say sonnax either but he said it does have one. I read up on it on here and made sure I asked them.

I paid around 2k for mine with Sonnax, a few years ago.
If it waan't for the fact manual fixes it, I would say check injectors, but knocking it into manual indicates the TC.
Unless you are good with these things, walk away. The fact the seller will drive with a fault like this means the vehicle isn't cared for.

A ruble strip feeling is the T/C lockup clutch on its way out generally speaking..
The GM box is utter shít, with the stock valvebody they have a life of 40-60k before it starts to **** the bed again..

The quality of the rebuild can vary, it might of had a complete recon but the Oil cooler not touched, and if the trans failed initially in a bad way then the new box would of been contaminated from the word go, and as said without the sonnax valvebody which is a must, it was destined for a short life anyway..

A good idea to replace or atleast flush through trans coolers and lines if you're fitting a new box to avoid contamination.

Light duty Auto used in a 2.7ton vehicle capable of towing 3.5 ton... grrr....

Anyway..

Atleast the M62 4.4 also has a **** gearbox.. :rolleyes::D

Appreciate the detailed reply!

Can’t make up my mind now whether to go for the 3.0 ltr or the 3.6 ltr. One has a crap box, the other eats its own engine for breakfast. But I’ve been bitten by the bug now… :(

He didn’t seem like a particularly handy guy, and chose to just use it in sport mode instead of looking into it, so yeah, I’ve walked away…
