2a battery eating my landy!!!

hi, dont think this is a general series problem but as i have one then its going in here!!!
recently around my battery area is starting to corrode! not really anything on the terminals but the paint has stripped off the battery housing and as this gungky stuff has run down the side of the rad and onto the axle, its eaten the paint as it goes,
now i'm pointing the finger at the battery although it starts just fine,
but is it buggered?
also the earth lead has turned green and not looking health...

A leaking battery is never a good sign.

Earth leads turn blue/green as they are usually made of copper wire braided with nickel plating. Once the nickel corrodes, the coppers exposed and corrodes. Same reason copper roof's go green with age.
Nothing to worry about for some years!!

If you pour boiling hot water over the battery and area where the corrosion is it will wash away all the acid and stop the corrision

Then coat the terminals in Vaseline or coppaslip.

i poured the hot water on and it vanished, amazing!! but didnt have time to treat properly,
just curious, what could have caused it?

Dunno but proably the reaction of electricity/copper/oxygen/moisture.

Sulphuric acid is the electrolyte used in lead-acid batteries (the clue is in the name!) and it's highly corrosive. Batteries will weep acid from the breather, filler plugs and terminals, especially if they're a bit old. The acid itself is corrosive enough but, as the water evaporates from it, it concentrates further and can really start to eat stuff. A plastic battery tray liner can help.
