24v winch on a 12v landy?

I've been looking for a few days and can't find a simple answer. Other than a big 12v to 24v transformer, which I can't find? Anyone else done it?
 
Transformer wont work as they use AC (Alternating Current) to work and winch / vehicle is DC. Options may be to run two separate 12v batteries for 24v but then charging becomes an issue (but not impossible with some relays). Or you may be able to change motor & solenoids for 12v versions.
 
series parallel relay maybe? I am using one to start my engine as that is 24v. But I have heard of people running winches off them too.
Would need some more investigation as to weather it could take the draw if it's some humongous winch mind.

I've seen 12v to 24v transformers (well they call it a converter??? Not sure what the difference is) but they only go up to about 30 amp which I don't think will be enough. I know if you wire batteries in series you get 24v but won't all my bulbs blow etc as soon as I flick it on? I can't find a diagram to do this anywhere online which is why I'm asking the question.

Have you any idea where I can get one from so I can ask the question? I take it I need 2 batteries? How is yours wired? Thanks, harry.
 
I meant you would need to use two extra batteries to power the winch independently from the car battery, only use the 12v system to charge them using the series/parallel relay. if one existed a 12 to 24v DC-DC converter would probably cost more than the winch (and car) as it would need to be rated for something like 300/400 amps. A 24v winch will draw less current than a 12v one (as the voltage is higher) but we are still talking 100's of amps.

They're designed for 24v starting and 12v running, asking who supplies them probably isn't going to help as it's not the norm.
They can be gotten off ebay for around £50. Or Royperfect sells them for about £35 from memory.
Here is the wiring diagram, which is actually quite simple.

Come to think of it I'm sure I have seen something made for the job, or maybe not made for the job initially but they have the info to make it work and as such probably charge silly money for the privilege.
 
you can get parallel start relays from older mercedes twin battery diesel cars n vans
the winch boys like them to 24v boost 12v winches, not continuous operation
 
Why not do it the other way round? Use a cheaper, lower power, 12 to 24 converter to charge a decent sized 24v battery, which powers your winch? Or maybe you can fit a 24v alternator alongside your 12v - no converting, just use it to charge a 24v battery, which can run your winch and any other 24v items you might fancy. Look at a lorry breakers. The 24v ground would, of course, have to be completely seperate from the 12v, also you would (Ithink) need a 24v regulator.
 
Why don't you go the whole hog on difficulty and fit a 240 volt winch. You would need an hell of a long mains lead mind you. Whats wrong with 12 volts?

Haha nothings wrong with 12v I got a 12000lb winch with the car so I wanna try and use it, if I can do for cheaper than a new one

Yeah I kind of like that idea, 12v to 24v converter in the battery box going into a 24v battery supplying just the winch. Sounds cheap too. Thanks.
