24 volt 109

Hi all, i just picked up my first mod landy, its a 109 and 24v, now, it has two large nato battery's in the back and thats it, i assume for the radio, is the starting system 12 or 24 volt and do i need more battery's? help? Also great fun site, keep up the good work.

well, if its a 24v ex mod, then all the electrics will be................................

Well thats interesting, i was talking to an ex serviceman who used to work on them and he said the black box that sits next to the coil on top of the back of the engine, between the coil and the bulk head if you like converts the coil to 12volt?

I'll check at work tomorrow and post back here if you haven't had a deffinitive answer by then. In the meantime why dont you stick a meter everywhere and see what you get.

fyi also for a new one, i have noticed before this evening my distributer says some thing like dru7582-12v-56a or something on it, don't quote me on number but i pay attention to the 12v bit?

if its a true ffr landy then the lectrics are 24v. you'll also notice that the whole ign. system is screened to prevent radio interference. i don't know what lot your mate was in but when i was a class one mechanic in the reme ffr landies where all 24 volt right down to the little bulbs behind the dash.
of course later models may be different but if yours is a 109 it should be 24 volt.
look at it this way ..why bother making the alternator 24v and why bother puuting in two batteries if all you are gonna do is drop the volts back to 12v??

Checked at work and the older and bolder agree with Slob. 24v through and through. Complete HT system shielded and spark plugs that cost the earth brand new.

Many FFR's have, I believe, been converted to 12v as some owners are just not comfortable with a 24v system.

i bedded her, i suppose some people call that the sack, so i could have sacked her in a way. but no i was just having a change..she'll be back later so don't take yer boxing gloves off yet.

The 2 btys in the back of the veh are for Radio use only. The veh will be 24v throughout whilst in Military use. You will need to check whether its been converted to 12v, since civillian use. Check veh bty if only 1 then veh is 12v

we used to use them for cooking and making the tea aswell. infact more so than for radios

we sed to play silly games with em like see who can hold a spanner across the terminals.

you can also use them for firing cat food tins about yer 'hood.
get a length of 60mm drain pipe with a blanking plate at one end. drill hole to take a spark plug. near or in blanking plate. screw in spark plug.
now connect spark plug to a coil and the coil to the battery via a switch.
bung some petrol down pipe followed by a cat food tin 'sans' sticky out rim.
point pipe at nearest freelander and hit the switch.(this is where you find out if your wires are long enough!).
can food tin can be substituted for an orange or apple of the right dia.

if youve got a diesel and no petrol ask a freelander driver for some hairspray. works just as well.
