Hi,

I’m new to this but recently caught the defender bug and when looking for a new car nothing else will do! Iv read all the pros and cons and am fully prepared for what we’re signing up for but I just wanted some advice on two defender 90s we are going to see.

First is a 2012 2.2 tdci XS with 100000 miles

Second is a 2007 2.4tdi XS with 55000 miles

Any advice or reviews much appreciated.

Lowest miles every time but I would want to see full MOTs to back up the 55,000 mile claim, that is incredibly low for an almost 12yr old motor!!!

But test drive, test drive, test drive. Make sure you arrange insurance on them and test drive them, rag the arze off them on the test drive to actually test out full suspension travel and performance, thrash it hard on the motorway and tight and twisty lanes, listen out for whiny transmissions and clunks, watch temp gauges for temp rises and potential spikes when driven hard.

100k miles should not be a problem provided there is proof of service history especially oil changes. Chassis condition is paramount, check thoroughly and walk away from any major corrosion unless you are prepared to work and spend on it. Like wot dieseldog69 says check the MOT history, yer can do this on the gov.uk website, at the same time you can check for any outstanding recalls. Engines have been wrecked because of a faulty oil pump, a recall fix sorted this (provided the recall was done). There has been lots of tdci's stolen and must be some ringers out there so check the VIN on the plate, chassis and windscreen all match, then get someone with a nanocom programmed for Pumas and check the VIN number stored in the engine management system. If it does not match report it. Check the anti theft alarm works (it might have been tampered with). Don't be put off by wet floors under the carpets, they all do that but it is fixable (but do check the floors aren't rotted out). Other than that check everything you would on any other car.

Oh, and make sure there are 2 keys, two fobs, and one key fits all locks and the ignition.Check the EKA is present, also the key number and the radio code is there (these should all be with the drivers pack / handbooks etc). If any of these is missing you WILL have problems in the future. Check the locking wheel nut tool is present (should be with the jack under the passenger seat in the battery box).
