Hey all, please can someone help me.

my defender 1993 200 tdi won’t start. All I have is the battery and oil light that comes on. None of my lights, indicators, hazards or any other electrical components work. I have a full battery too.

I assume it could be the starter switch, a relay (although I don’t know which one) or the solenoid switch. Anyone have any ideas?

That many problems is almost certainly an earth fault - you’ve lost a major earth somewhere, …. Probably one of the chassis to engine ones, or quite a few of the smaller ones to the smaller circuits…

Std 200 tdi starter earth circuits are very poor, really need one from bat neg to chassis, and another from bat neg to the engine itself.

Is there anywhere in particular the earth should go from negative battery to the engine?

Nearest big manly nut/bolt, I used one of the satrter mounting studs, figuring thats closest to where its needed and its a short run from the battery, chassis earth I think I went to one of the cross member bolts.

Was a bad earth. But now have another issue. I put it into gear drove about a meter and something went clunk. Now when I put into gear and let go of the clutch pedal it doesn’t move. Can rev it and nothing.

many ideas?

It’s always an earth - clutch gone, clutch failure, clutch fork. Just check it hasn’t jumped to neutral in the transfer and diff department too.

As Doriz says bet its just jumepd out of range in the tf box.

You lot are absolute legends, it’s the little things you forget when owning defenders. I haven’t owned one in 4 years and now having one again, although a bit of a headache sometimes, it’s great to be back!

All sorted now, onto service parts.

thanks again!
