Hi all just come back from a long trip lots of motorway miles
My 200tdi almost hit red on the temp 60-70mph it norman6ly always sits a third of the way
I lifted the bonnet to fined water dripping down the back of the water pump ..dose this meen my pump is bad ..plus the coolent looked abit brown/rusty..any thoughts ? Thanks

New pump probably needed, get the torch out and have a good look. Gasket for the defender 200tdi and the disco conversion 200tdi is different, original get the defender one, converted get the disco one.

The coolant should really be changed every 2 years, not only is it an anti freeze its also a corrosion inhibitor and its this what weakens with age allowing the rust to start, it is also a lubricant for the pump seal.
The tell tale hole that shows the seal has failed is normally underneath the pump, so if you have coolant flowing down from the top you may have a leak from elsewhere.

Be careful of the top 3 bolts passenger side as they go right through into the engine block and can snap causing all sorts of grief, if they come out fine either slather them in grease or red hermatite when refitting.

Not red hermatite on the threads surely? Copperslip should be fine?

Old tip told to me by an old timer, cover the threads in red and as its non setting doesnt make getting the bolt any harder, but does stop the coolant travelling down the threads to seize the bolt in, he swore blind by it and he taught me an awful lot over the years.

I personally just use std everyday grease but I did used to work on Daf trucks and their head bolts had gasket sealant on the threads to stop the coolant rotting/seizing the threads out.
