200tdi vs 300tdi

I have taken my 300tdi off road plenty of times and even now am still blown away by what its capable of. As for " the steep bits " when you are descending in an auto if the vehicle starts to gain too much speed you have to use the throttle to increase the engine braking thus pulling the vehicle back and under control. Your best bet is to visit a few off road sites and chat to a few people there ( and you will soon realise that most serious off-roaders use auto gearboxes ) due to their greater control with engine breaking .

The correct technique of a good descent in an auto is to only use the throttle in first and under no account touch the brake.

hope this helps with the manual v's auto argument. ( ive had both auto and manual ) and would go for auto all the time.

Just been to a local dealer and he has a 200 Tdi and 300 Tdi for sale not a lot in price. Was tempted by the 300 but at the end of the day its condition thats swaying it for me. The 300 may be on an N plate but the 200 is in much better condition in and out. I know that both suffer from rear floor and mounting rot. Is there anything else that I should look out for on the 300 ?

that is a load of bollocks. ive been offroading in auto's loads of times and used the brakes when descendng steep hills, its all about how you use the brakes. they always spout that "never use the brakes" **** to stop people from slamming their foot on em when they start to panic. an experienced off roader can descend a hill using the brakes without any problems

"Look Dad - a traffic jam."
"Hang on kiddies - we need to build up a bit of speed to tackle this one".

As mentioned - keep yer right foot on the gas to encourage the wheels to keep turning, and left tootsies on the brake to stop the scenery going all blurry.
 
If's that the case i have been ill advised by an off - roading pro and i will hold me ead in shame.

at least it got a few comments though i suppose
 
nah - keep your head up high. That 'Off roading pro' sounds a bit dodgy.:rolleyes:
