200tdi Vacuum connection to brakes

Very very nearly finished my 200tdi conversion off but have one final (well...) question...

There is a connection I was shown previously when asking questions between the vacuum thing and the brake cylinder. Which way does this work? Is this the engine providing a vacuum for the brake thing?

If so... what happens if you don't need it? My brake cylinder thing doesn't have an input for a vacuum port so what do i do with the 200tdi connection? Do i just blank it off in which case does it need sealing or just dust protecting?

From my experience with other engines, it would be the engine providing a vacuum to the brake servo, if you're not using it then you need to seal it off as it'll be letting air in and you'll lose vacuum pressure. Can't think why it'd be any different on a 200tdi, but it could.

I'd be tempted to take it off and sell it and make a blanking plate for where it was.

lose vauum pressure to what?.........having said that sealed mine off.....did a lovely pro job with a short piece of hose, a bolt and jubilee clip

Fair point actually, im used to working on petrol engines with huge numbers of sensors, which would get confused by it not being blanked off....

Thinking on, i'm assuming nothing else would actually need a vacuum feed so youd probably get away with just leaving it dis.

Is there a SERVO in the brakes system?

It's a big round black thing with the brake master cylinder bolted on the front of it, under the bonnet at the top back, just in front of where the driver sits.

I have a 1969 Lightweight now fitted with a 2.5TD, and overdrive, and it has a HUGE servo. Is that an after-market fit?

It's on a new galvanised chassis, and all the running gear is like new.

I don't need it.

It is just sitting here.

Must finish it off!

Cheers for the replies. No i don't have a brake servo so i'll be blanking it off for now then, cheers.

Engine fires up and runs on key now

though have alternator issues

sorted now - hadn't got the control cable attached (doh!)

So just need to wire up near enough everything, bolt everything back on and i'll be done.

Just sorted out some new insurance too - including my new shiny winch, the engine conversion, break down cover, green laning, etc. came to a grand total of £100. They were even willing to pretend i'm 25 as it makes a huge difference and i will be this coming month. Got to say - i'm incredibly happy with that!

Good qoute mines come in at 600. With the conversion declared, probably because im 20 etc . regarding the altenator do you use the series cables or the disco ones? Reason I ask is cus I have the disco ones still hooked up but not so sure how the charging system works. . .

Who are you insured with out of interest? I'm 20 and been getting some pretty stupid quotes, even though I've got no convictions, no accidents and live in a low risk area!

As for your alternator cables it shoudnt matter id just use whatevers biggest, its just a big live between the battery to alternator, only bit that might cause problems is for the alternator warning light that has to be connected for it to do anything usually, caught me out big time when re-wiring the canal boat and wondering why the battery volts kept declining!

Edit, just noticed you sorted it, and sounds like you did the same as I did!

Footman James for the insurance... but if your under 25 i doubt it will be that cheap.

Disco wiring wont reach alternator if you relocate battery to under passenger seat (well didn't for me)

Series wiring isn't up to it,

I basically put in a little waterproof box and connected the disco cable to a thick cable and onto the alternator.

On the series alternator for now, but, look to change it to a BIG one soon - as a winch arrived for me today

Im insured with adrian flux Told them about the conversion and they tacked on £100 quid.
All the other comapanys when insuring as standard 21/4 petrol earlier this year where like 1600 - 2000 saying your to young and the engine is too big! regardless that the engine produces the same power as a nissan micra ha

If you need any big cables making up, I can go up to 95mm and can also stick lugs on the end, then give me a shout, if I do end up ever borrowing your trailer I'll be happy to help you out! All comes from the same place as the oil anyway.

Good time to think about a second battery? Tbh no alternator is gonna keep up with the draw of a winch
